Haley Giroux, the 2023 Next Work Environment Competition student winner, sparks conversation about neurodiversity in the office through her design solution “MindWorks: A Neuro-Inclusive Workplace.”
This authentic Gen-Z will graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in Interior Design in May 2024. Did you know that 85% of college-educated, on-the-spectrum workers are unemployed!? (2023 U.S. Department of Labor) Educated high-functioning adults on the autism spectrum are fully capable of producing meaningful work and value; in fact, they can be 30% MORE productive than their neurotypical peers if given the right environment and opportunities.
Yet, workplaces today leave neurodiverse people feeling ostracized as they are often forced to fit into our cookie-cutter work culture, where they can’t function to the best of their ability.
Introducing a new design strategy may offer a solution to help re-acclimate neurodiverse and remote workers back to in-person work. Haley will open up the conversation about creating an inclusive environment that allows and recognizes the unique skills and potential of people with autism. Because every mind, no matter how it’s wired, has something valuable to offer.
